Multi-Camera Technique – Assignment 2

Multi-Camera Techniques

Equipment list -

1 Canon C100 - This will be used for handheld shots, due to the heavier weight of the camera it should be the best for the handheld look, also with its manual zoom funtion it makes it better for these shots.
2 Black Magic pocket cameras - These camera's will be used for the still tripod shots, these display a very high quality flat image, that is great for post editing.
2 Lavalier sets - The lavalier microphones enable us to have a portable audio source, so we can get the microphones closer to the actors mouths, if we used a shotgun mic, the audio would have been too quiet and awkward to place.
2 Camera tripods - These tripods will be our base camera's for still stable footage.
Lighting kit - The lighting kit will add a huge amount of production value to the look of my documentary, a 3 point lighting system will be applied.
Zoom H4N - Used to record the audio.

Film Roles -

Director - Charlie Barnfather - I will be the head director of this production, as I will not be acting in it at all, so I will always be behind the camera, this documentary is improvised through questions to help get a discussion.
Assistant Directors - Connor Cross, Kieran Atkins - They will help to give any extra ideas or directions during the production.
Cinematographers - Charlie Barnfather, Kieran Atkins, Connor Cross - I will be setting up the stable tripod shots, the handheld shots will be filmed by all three of us during production, from different angles.
Actors - Kieran Atkins, Connor Cross, Sam McClean - These actors have had experience when it comes to music, and are all fairly passionate about the subject.
Sound Engineer - Kieran Atkins - Kieran will be setting up the lavalier mics to ensure they are working and recording properly
Video Editor - Charlie Barnfather - I will be editing the footage in post, cutting it together and adding any effects or transitions if needed.
Colour Grader - Charlie Barnfather - I will also be colour grading the footage, giving a natural visual style to the documentary.
Lighting - Charlie Barnfather - I will be setting up the 3 point lighting system to help add production value and make it look visually better.

Locations -

TV-studio - The television studio will be used for most of our production, mainly for our interview part of the documentary, this is easy to get access of and also easy for the actors, but also gives us a good place for lighting and adjustability.
B-roll footage - Hopefully we will be able to use kieran's home for B-roll footage, this is because his house is a very bright friendly environment and will be good for B-roll. If not the studio may have to be used.

Issues with production and post -

Pre-production we had some questions written down, around 10-20 the issue with this is that we soon realised that this wasn't enough, so we had to improvise quite a few of the questions, this sometimes became closed questions that were answered "yes" or "no" the problem with this is that we couldn't then use that for our documentary effectively wasting time.

Although using the Canon C100 for the handheld shots was the right decision, there is a slight difference in appearence to how the black magic camera's look and how the C100 looks, this meant that I had to colour grade/correct them differently to try and get the same look which was a struggle.

Another issue was time and effort, for B-roll I only managed to get Kieran and Connor in the TV-studio for B-roll shots, this location was a very ineffective for B-roll as it was dark and dull, the atmosphere was not interesting and not related to the music theme at all. The camera I used for the B-roll also was a shoulder cam and it struggled to automatically choose the focus and exposure because of the intense and contrast studio lighting.
